Which cannabis product is right for you? A format-by-goal buyer's guide

Instead of defining every format, this guide matches each one to a real reason you might be shopping — discreet, fast, long-lasting, first-timer-easy, or no-gear — so you can narrow the menu before you ever walk in.

Home / Learn / Which Cannabis Product Is Right for You? Flower, Pre-Rolls, Vapes, Edibles & Drinks
The short version
  • There's no single "best" format — there's the one that fits what you're after today. Start from your goal (discreet, fast, long-lasting, easy to portion, or no gear) and the shortlist picks itself.
  • Want it discreet, with no smoke or smell? Look at vapes, edibles, and drinks — a pocket vape like a FERNWAY AIO, a gummy, or a single-serve AYRLOOM or LAYUP can.
  • Want it to come on quickly? Inhaled formats — flower and pre-rolls (a FYRE eighth, a Mac Pharms or Toke Folks pre-roll) or a vape — are felt sooner than anything you swallow. Want it to last for hours instead? That's the edible and drink side.
  • Newer to this? Single-serve, pre-measured formats are the friendliest place to start — a 10mg AYRLOOM drink or a low-dose MFNY gummy. Start low, give it time, keep it 21+ and at home. Browse the live menu; stock changes daily.

Standing in front of a dispensary menu for the first time, the question isn't really "what is a vape?" — we have format explainers for that. The harder question is the one nobody answers for you: which of these is right for me? Flower, pre-rolls, vapes, gummies, drinks — they all get you a legal, lab-tested cannabis product, but they behave differently, and the right pick depends entirely on what you actually want out of the afternoon.

So this guide flips it around. Instead of defining terms, it starts from your goal — keeping it discreet, wanting it fast, wanting it to last, keeping it simple your first time, or not wanting any gear — and points you at the formats that fit. Read the section that matches your reason for shopping, and you'll walk in with a shortlist instead of a blank stare. One honest note up front: we'll describe how each format works — how it's used, how fast it tends to come on, how long it tends to run — not how it'll make you feel. That part is individual, and nobody at a counter can promise it.

How should you actually choose a format?

Ignore potency-chasing and "strongest thing you've got" for a minute. For most shoppers, four practical questions sort the whole menu:

  • Do you mind smoke or smell? If yes, that steers you away from flower and toward vapes, edibles, and drinks.
  • How soon do you want to feel it? Inhaled formats (flower, pre-rolls, vapes) are felt within minutes; things you swallow (edibles, drinks) take much longer to arrive.
  • How long do you want it to run? Inhaled tends to be shorter; ingested tends to last for hours.
  • How much fuss are you up for? Some formats need a grinder or a lighter; others are a can you crack open or a pen you puff.

Answer those four and you've usually narrowed five formats down to one or two. The rest of this guide is just those questions, answered one at a time, with real in-stock examples from our Richmond Hill shelf.

This is product education for adults 21+, not health or dosing advice. Cannabis affects everyone differently, and nothing here is a claim about treating or improving anything. Questions about your health belong with a doctor or pharmacist, not a retail counter.

Which format is best if you want to keep it discreet?

If "no smoke, no smell, nothing to see" is the priority, three formats do that well:

  • Vapes. An all-in-one pen — think a FERNWAY or EUREKA disposable, or an MFNY 510 cartridge — produces vapor instead of smoke, with far less lingering odor than a joint. It's pocketable and there's nothing to pack or roll. See our vapes explainer for how AIO vs. 510 works.
  • Edibles. A gummy or chocolate is the most invisible option there is — no smell at all. Our shelf runs from SPACE POPPERS and NYCE gummies to CANNABALS chocolate cones. Just read the edibles label so you know the serving size before you unwrap it.
  • Drinks. A sealed AYRLOOM or LAYUP can reads like any other soda or iced tea in your hand. No gear, no odor, and the dose is printed on the front.

All three keep public rules simple to follow, too — but discreet doesn't mean anywhere. New York only allows adult-use consumption in private, so plan any of these around a place you're actually allowed to enjoy it.

Which format comes on the fastest?

When you inhale cannabis, it's felt within a few minutes; when you swallow it, your body has to digest it first, so it can take well over an hour. If sooner is what you're after, you want an inhaled format:

  • Flower — classic dried bud you grind and smoke yourself. A FYRE Apples and Bananas eighth, HONEST PHARM CO Blue Dream, or Toke Folks Alien OG are the kind of jarred flower our menu is built around. See our flower beginner's guide.
  • Pre-rolls — flower already ground and rolled for you, which is flower's speed without the prep. A Mac Pharms Kush Mints, Toke Folks Jack Herer, or a Dogwalkers multi-pack are ready to go out of the tube. More in our pre-rolls explainer.
  • Vapes — inhaled like flower, so a similar quick onset, just without smoke or grinding.
Fast onset is exactly why moderation matters with inhaled formats: you feel it soon, so there's no reason to rush. A puff or two, then wait, beats over-committing up front.

Which format lasts the longest?

The flip side of "fast" is "long." Because edibles and drinks are digested, they take longer to arrive and tend to run for several hours — a very different shape of afternoon than a pre-roll. If you want something you set up once and don't have to revisit, look at the ingestible side:

  • Gummies and chocolatesMac Pharms, SPACE POPPERS, or CANNABALS edibles, portioned into pieces so you control how much you take.
  • Drinks — an AYRLOOM Half & Half or LAYUP Peach Tea, sipped slow.

The trade-off is patience. Because ingestibles are slow to come on, the classic mistake is deciding it "isn't working" and taking more before the first amount has arrived. Take one serving, then give it a good long while before you even think about a second. New York caps ingestibles at 10mg of THC per serving and 100mg per package, so a single-serve drink or a labeled gummy square is a built-in, tested portion — how to read the label walks through it.

What's the easiest format if it's your first time?

For a first visit, the friendliest formats are the ones where the dose is measured for you and there's nothing to prepare:

  • A single-serve drink. A 10mg AYRLOOM Lemonade (1:1) or LAYUP Limeade is one can, one serving, printed right on the front — about as legible as cannabis gets.
  • A low-dose edible. Something like an MFNY 30mg 3-pack breaks into small, defined pieces, so you can start with a fraction and see how it sits.
  • A single pre-roll. If you'd rather inhale, one pre-roll — a Toke Folks or Mac Pharms 1g — is a self-contained way to try flower without buying gear.

Whatever you start with, the rule is the same one experienced shoppers still use: start low, go slow. Buy from the licensed menu so the dose on the label is a tested figure, keep it to a comfortable at-home setting, and don't drive. There's no prize for the biggest first bite.

Which formats need zero gear or cooking?

If you don't want to own a grinder, a lighter, or a battery — and definitely don't want to cook anything — several formats are ready as-sold:

  • Drinks — crack and sip. Nothing else.
  • Edibles — unwrap and eat. No kitchen involved; these come pre-made and lab-tested, which is the whole point of buying rather than making your own.
  • Pre-rolls — rolled and ready; you only need a light.
  • Disposable AIO vapes — a FERNWAY or EUREKA all-in-one is charged and filled out of the box, no separate battery or cartridge to match up.

The formats that do ask for a little gear are loose flower (a grinder helps, plus something to smoke it in) and concentrates (which typically need specific equipment). Great products — just not the grab-and-go end of the shelf.

What if you want the most out of it — the higher-intensity end?

Some shoppers aren't beginners and want the potent, characterful stuff. That end of the menu leans toward:

  • Infused pre-rolls and moonrocks — flower boosted with concentrate. Our LOBO moonrocks (SOAP x Purple Punch, Blueberry Diesel, OG Chem) and infused pre-rolls (the FUERTE and BOLD lines), plus AYRLOOM and AETERNA infused pre-roll packs, live here.
  • Concentrates — badders, live resin, and hashish like MFNY live resin badder or LOBO hashish, for people who already have the setup and know what they want.

These reward experience, not curiosity. If a friend is newer, this isn't where to start them — point them back up to the single-serve drink or low-dose gummy, and let the team match the intensity to the person.

A quick match-it-to-your-goal cheat sheet

If you only remember one thing, remember this shortlist:

  • Discreet, no smell → vape, edible, or drink.
  • Feel it soon → flower, pre-roll, or vape.
  • Have it last for hours → edible or drink.
  • Easiest first time → single-serve drink or low-dose gummy.
  • No gear, grab-and-go → drink, edible, pre-roll, or disposable vape.
  • Most intensity (experienced) → infused pre-roll, moonrock, or concentrate.

Plenty of people keep two or three formats around for different occasions — a vape for out and about, a drink for a slow evening, flower for the ritual of it. You don't have to pick one forever; you just have to pick one for today.

How do you see what's actually in stock and get help choosing?

The one catch with any specific product named here: a dispensary menu turns over constantly, so the exact strain or flavor may be different by the time you read this. The live menu is always the current list, and it's the fastest way to see which formats and options are on the shelf right now. Stock changes daily.

Cannabis Cowboy is a licensed adult-use dispensary on Jamaica Avenue in Richmond Hill, Queens (NY OCM-RETL-24-000068), serving Ozone Park, Jamaica, Woodhaven, Kew Gardens and South Richmond Hill. Tell the team what you're after — discreet, quick, long, simple, no gear — and they'll match a format to it on the spot. Frequently asked
What's the best cannabis product for a beginner?+
There isn't one "best" — but the friendliest starting points are formats where the dose is measured for you and there's nothing to prepare: a single-serve 10mg drink, a low-dose gummy you can break into small pieces, or a single pre-roll if you'd rather inhale. Whatever you choose, start low, give it time before taking more, buy from a licensed dispensary so the label is tested, and keep it 21+ and at home.
Which cannabis format is the most discreet?+
Vapes, edibles, and drinks are the most discreet options. A pocket vape produces vapor instead of smoke with far less lingering smell than flower, a gummy or chocolate has no odor at all, and a sealed cannabis drink looks like any other can. Flower and pre-rolls are the least discreet because of the smoke and scent. Remember that New York only permits adult-use consumption in private.
What's the difference between how fast flower and edibles work?+
Inhaled formats like flower, pre-rolls, and vapes are felt within a few minutes because the cannabis reaches you quickly. Edibles and drinks are swallowed and digested first, so they take much longer to come on — often well over an hour — and then tend to last for several hours. That difference in timing is the single biggest reason to pick one over the other, and the reason you should never take more of an edible just because it hasn't kicked in yet.
Which cannabis product needs no equipment?+
Drinks (crack and sip), edibles (unwrap and eat), pre-rolls (rolled and ready, just add a light), and disposable all-in-one vapes (charged and filled out of the box) all work as sold with no extra gear. Loose flower is easier with a grinder, and concentrates generally need specific equipment, so those are the two formats that ask for a bit more setup.
Do you need a medical card to choose any of these formats in New York?+
No. Adult-use cannabis is legal in New York, so any of these formats — flower, pre-rolls, vapes, edibles, or drinks — can be bought by anyone 21 or older with a valid, unexpired government-issued photo ID from a licensed dispensary. No medical card is required.

For use only by adults 21 years of age and older. Keep out of reach of children and pets. In case of accidental ingestion or overconsumption, contact the Poison Center at 1-800-222-1222 or call 9-1-1. Please consume responsibly.
